Master Crosshair Placement Before You Start Shooting

Most players miss not because they have bad mouse control, but because their crosshair is floating in the wrong place when an enemy appears. In virtually every FPS, your crosshair should be at head level and always near the corner or angle where an enemy is likely to peek. If you're walking down a hallway, don't point at the floor ten meters ahead—pre-aim the head-height edge of the next doorway. This simple habit reduces the distance your mouse must travel to land a shot from several inches to a few millimeters.
To train this, practice in actual matches or against bots while keeping your crosshair glued to imaginary head-high lines along walls. When you approach a corner, put your crosshair at the edge of the wall, not in the open space. Hold it there as you swing wide, and when you see a target, you only need to click, not to search. You can also play a round of deathmatch where you deliberately fire only when your crosshair already sits on an enemy's head before you press the trigger. This forces you to read angles and positions ahead of time. Over time, aim becomes anticipation, not panic. Pro players often appear to have impossibly fast reactions, but in reality they have mathematically minimized their mouse travel. Build Precision with Controlled Tracking and Flick Drills

However, more important than grinding an hour a day is practicing with controlled, purposeful difficulty. For tracking drills—keeping your crosshair on a moving target—start with large, slow-moving bots. Your goal is not perfect score but smooth, non-jittery motion. Keep your eyes locked on the target, not your crosshair, and let your hand follow. Move your whole arm for wide horizontal movement and use fine wrist/finger adjustments for micro-corrections. If you notice you are correcting by overcorrecting—that is, passing left and right across the target—slow the bot speed down until you can stay on the target for a full 10-15 seconds without leaving it.
For flick shots, do short, explosive bursts from a neutral repositioning of the crosshair to a target. Place the crosshair far from the target, then snap onto it in one quick motion. But do not jerk. The key to flicks is moving fast while remaining under control; an uncontrolled flick is worse than a slow, accurate one. A practical approach is the "tab-target drill": in an aim trainer, use a scenario where a new target spawns after every shot. Start by ensuring you hit 95% of easy targets at a moderate speed. Then increase target size or speed only slightly. Rushing to hard settings actually trains sloppy habits. Also, alternate between tracking and flicking in the same session—for example, 10 minutes of tracking, then 10 minutes of flicking. This trains both the smooth pursuit system and the ballistic snap system of your mouse control. Remember: fast aim comes from slow, perfect practice done consistently, not from frantic, sloppy repetition.

Lock In a Consistent Sensitivity and Crosshair Setup
Many players sabotage their accuracy by constantly switching sensitivity, crosshair color, or even mouse grip. Your brain builds muscle memory based on a consistent relationship between your hand motion and the on-screen distance. When you change sensitivity every few days, your subconscious aiming system never stabilizes. The first step is to choose a sensitivity that feels comfortable for both wide 180-degree turns and tiny precision adjustments. A common guideline is to find an eDPI (DPI × in-game sensitivity) that lets you complete a 180-degree turn with roughly 20-30 cm of mouse movement. Lower sensitivities generally make tracking easier but require more arm movement; higher sensitivities make flicks faster but harder to control. There is no magic number, but once you choose one, write it down and never change it for at least two months.
Also lock in your view model and crosshair. A small, bright, non-distracting crosshair is usually better than a huge flashing one. Many pros use a simple cross or dot with a bright green or pink color because it stands out against most backgrounds. Avoid dynamic crosshairs that expand while shooting, as they can visually distract you. Keep your FOV constant too—a change in FOV can subtly affect how far you need to move your mouse to aim at an object, even when your sensitivity is the same. If you play multiple FPS games, try to match their first-person sensitivities as closely as possible, or use the same cm/360 conversion. This does not mean you become robotically locked; it means your movement becomes automatic. Analyze Every Miss to Turn Weaknesses into Training Goals
Most aim training fails because players repeat the same mistake over and over without identifying why they missed. If you want to improve accuracy fast, you need to become your own aim coach. Start by recording a few matches or deathmatch sessions, then replay each miss in slow motion. Ask yourself a simple question: where was my crosshair relative to the target when I fired? If your shot goes in front of the enemy as they strafe, you likely have poor reaction to horizontal movement—your tracking is a step behind. If you shoot behind them, you may be over-predicting or flicking too aggressively. If you shoot under their head, your crosshair placement was too low. If you shoot slightly above, you likely had too much vertical mouse movement or panic-jerked upward. Categorize your missed shots into groups: undershoot, overshoot, vertical error, timing error, or early trigger pull. Then create a targeted drill for your most frequent category.

If your misses are overshoots, train with smaller, closer targets to refine fine motor control. If you struggle with moving targets, play tracking bots that move unpredictably and deliberately speed them up. Also track your average accuracy and headshot percentage in a spreadsheet.
